After having been occupied by the French between 1863 and 1918, Cancún was ceded to the United States after the Gadsden Purchase in 1853. The treaty did not include Cozumel, which remained in Mexico until 1954. In 1955, after the Revolution, the Republic of Mexico issued the Cancún del Caribe Zona Sur Land Condominium Contract to nearly 250 settlers, although it was soon canceled due to the “negative social effects” the agreement had.
